The theatre department was started by Betsy Wells, an English Teacher at KMHS, in 1979.  In 2003, upon Mrs. Wells's retirement, Dan Treharne took over the program.  In the first few years of his tenure, Mr. Treharne created a dedicated technical theatre class, the Play Production class (P.R.O.P.S.), a Shakespeare class, and W.I.T.? (What Improv Troupe?). In 2005, a Theatre I class was taught by English teacher Conrad Martin.  The interest grew so much that in 2006 a second theatre teacher, Misti Arter, was hired.  Mrs. Arter worked with the department until 2008, when she moved away, and Traci Dill was hired.  Mrs. Dill was instrumental in starting a drama club at Kings Mountain Middle School.  This club ran for several years until Mrs. Dill moved to lead the theatre program at Crest High School in 2013.  In the fall of 2012, KMHS Theatre won the State High School Play Festival with Down Came the Rain by Burges Clark.  Starring Justin Chapman and Nick Lease, this show represented North Carolina at the 2013 SETC Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.  Heather Achter was hired to replace Mrs. Dill in 2013. The department experienced success with This is a Play, advancing to State Play Festival for the 2nd year in a row and recieving Honorable Mention for The Other Room in 2016. In the fall of 2017, Mr. Treharne moved to Shelby High School and Mrs. Achter took over as head of theatre. Mr. Logan Canipe became the most recent second theatre hire for the school.
